4th Period CLASS PROJECTS |
We will typically do 1 project every 6-12 weeks. As I assign projects, I will post the instructions and related resources on this page.
Book Report #2
Start Date: November 11, 2008
Due Date: November 14, 2008 - song November 21, 2008 the rest of the project
Book Type: Song
Presentation Type: Writing and Playing song in class (playing the song is optional)
Assignment: In studying poetry, it is important to understand that it takes many forms, and a musical song can be one form of poetry. For this project, you need to do the following tasks:
1) You need to pick a song (any song of your choice) that is appropriate for school (no vulgarity or innappropriate messages)
2) Pick 10 lines from your song that do not repeat anywhere in the ten lines.
3) Copy those 10 lines, by hand, on a sheet of paper, skipping lines as you go.
4) Scan those 10 lines of music. This is where you show an emphasis on a particular word/syllable or where there is a softer sound. See page 587 for more information related to this.
5) Draw a picture to represent the message/scene of your song on the paper provided. Include:
a. Song Name
b. Singer/Band
c. Drawing
6) Write a short story that uses the message from or song or the scene painted in the words of your song. It can be no shorter than 1 page and no shorter than 5 paragraphs. Of course, keep these appropriate for school material.
Book Report #1
Start Date: October 20, 2008 - we will go to the library to check out books on this date.
Due Date: September 31, 2008
Book Type: Fiction - Historical Fiction would be acceptable, also. It MUST be a chapter book.
Presentation Type: Book in a Bag
Assignment: You must read your book and then select 5 items to put in a bag that represent important aspects of your book. It could include items that represent important aspects of the main character's habits, important events in the story, or important items used in the story (all school appropriate items, of coures). Put these 5 items in your bag. Your bag should also be something to represent the plot or theme in your story (you can use an army duffle bag, if it is appropriate, a paper bag decorated to go along with the story in the book, etc.). Be creative with what you do with your bag as well as the items you select. On the day that your project is due, you will present your book to the class and explain the storyline as well as show the five different items and explain how they relate to the
story.
We will use some time in class to read your book, but you will also need to read the book on your own time, as well.

Due Date: N
Book Type: Autobiography/Biography

2) Read the book (there will be some time in class for that).
3) Perform outside research related to the person you are reading about. (Again, we will take one class period to do this in the computer lab together.)

NOTE:
A good book report holds the interest of both the presenter and the audience, and it gives the listeners a desire to read the book.
A good book report calls attention to the craft of the author by quoting his words.A good book report helps the reader think carefully about the author's message to compare that message to what the reader thinks, in their own opinion.
A good book report should not be a plot summary.
