WELCOME TO ART
Sixth Grade Classes
Some of the students have had arts/crafts either at the Boys/Girls Club or in their elementary schools while others have not had any art at all. So the classes begin with the study of elements of art: lines, shapes, forms, texture, space, and color. They look at and practice four shading techniques along with the value scale. They then continue by a study of the components of the face and practice exercises of each one and end with a completion of a face of their choice.
Seventh Grade Classes
The seventh grade classes (while in the sixth grade) have observed and used some of the basic elements in Art; such as lines, shapes, and forms. As well as studying facial features, primary and secondary colors, and color schemes. As a seventh grade class they begin by becoming familiar with useful terms/vocabulary used in art. During the course of the six weeks the classes will practice techniques and strategies meant to aid in bringing three dimensional/realistic appearances to two dimensional works. They will study perspective, object placement, object size, shaking, and overlapping of objects as some of the techniques previously mentioned.
Eighth Grade Classes
The eighth grade students have already work with and used various media; this year the quality of their work should improve along with their creativity. They will do two still life works one in pencil and the other one will be done in color. Using a mirror, the techniques and practices from the other grade levels the classes will do a self-portrait, concentrating on the distinct features they make them individuals and reviewing placement of the facial features. An invention/improvement project will be included in the six weeks work; requiring the students to either invent an item or product or make an improvement on an existing item or product. One of the bigger works for the six weeks will be painting a ceiling panel. The panels are old and reconditioned and the students will use
tempera paint to do their work after they have done a rough sketch of their ideas. The completed panels will be put in the ceiling over the art area.
